With top positions 4, 5 and 7 in the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg are at the forefront of innovation in Europe.
The EIS ranks the 27 EU Member States and a number of non-EU countries according to their research and innovative strength.
What led to the high level of innovation in the three countries and top positions in the ranking were in particular, the quality of education and research on Benelux territory, together with a high level of expenditure on R&D.
The Benelux countries stood out in artificial intelligence, quantum, photonics and hydrogen sectors.
